Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Air Break?
An Air Break is a pneumatic braking system used in heavy vehicles, such as trucks and buses. It uses compressed air to apply the brakes.
How does an air brake system work?
Air is pressurized by a motor-mounted compressor. The compressor then pumps the air into storage tanks, which store the compressed air until it is needed. The air pressure is used to apply the service brakes and release the parking brake.
How does a pneumatic system work?
By definition, in pneumatic systems, air is transported in its compressed form via valves. The energy stored in the form of compressed air is then transformed into kinetic energy, to set a cylinder piston in motion, for example.
What are air brakes used for?
Air brake systems are used on large commercial vehicles because they can develop and transmit high mechanical forces over long distances using simple components and connections. They use compressed air, stored in reservoirs, to generate the force that applies the brakes to each wheel.
